The L permit covers temporary assignments and fixed-term contracts. It is issued for the duration of the contract up to 12 months and may be extended once, for a total maximum of 24 months. After the maximum duration, the holder must leave Switzerland for at least 12 months before reapplying. Like the B permit, it is subject to annual Federal Council quotas (4,000 L permits for non-EU/EFTA in 2026) and requires employer sponsorship plus a labour market test.
