The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) was introduced on 1 June 2024 under Section 20a of the Residence Act. It allows non-EU nationals with either a fully recognised qualification or a points-based assessment to enter Germany for up to 12 months to seek employment. Holders may work up to 20 hours/week (including trial employment) during the job search. Once employment is secured, the card converts to the appropriate work permit. Points are awarded for qualification recognition, shortage occupation, experience, language skills, age, and ties to Germany.
